케임브릿지 사전은 'annals'를 "the record of an activity or organization, arranged year by year, or a history that covers a long period of time(긴 시간을 다루며, 연도별로 정리된 어떤 활동이나 조직의 기록 또는 역사)"이라고 정의했다.

"This period was one of the darkest in the annals of US history(이 시기는 미국 역사 연대기에서 가장 어두운 시기 중 하나이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'annals'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something is in the annals of a nation or field of activity, it is recorded as part of its history(어떤 것이 한 국가 또는 활동 분야의 annals에 있다면, 그 역사의 일부로 기록된 것이다)."
