케임브릿지 사전은 'detente'를 "an improvement in the relationship between two countries that in the past were not friendly and did not trust each other(과거에 친하지 않았고 서로를 신뢰하지 않았던 구 국가 사이에서의 관계 개선)"라고 정의했다.

"The talks are aimed at furthering détente between the two countries(회담은 두 국가 사이의 더 큰 관계 개선을 목표로 한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'detente'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Detente is a state of friendly relations between two countries when previously there had been problems between them(detente는 문제가 있었던 두 국가 사이의 친선을 가리킨다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.
