케임브릿지 사전은 'mealy-mouthed'를 "not brave enough to say what you mean directly and honestly(자신이 의도하는 바를 직접적으로, 정직하게 말할 용기가 없는)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'mealy-mouthed'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone is being mealy-mouthed, you are critical of them for being unwilling to speak in a simple or open way because they want to avoid talking directly about something unpleasant(어떤 사람이 mealy-mouthed라고 말한다면, 그 사람이 불쾌한 것에 대해 직접적으로 말하기를 피하기 때문에, 단순하거나 대놓고 말하기를 꺼린다는 점을 비판하는 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.
