케임브릿지 사전은 'go off half-cocked'를 "to fail because of not being well planned or because of starting too soon(잘 계획하지 않았거나, 너무 일찍 시작해서 실패하다)"이라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 "go off at half-cock'을 "to fail as a result of inadequate preparation or premature starting(불충분한 준비 또는 정상보다 이른 출발 때문에 실패하다)"이라고 설명했다.

옥스퍼드 사전은 'go off half-cocked'를 "​to start before preparations are complete, so that the effect or result is not as it should be(준비가 완료되기 전에 시작해서, 효과나 결과가 마땅히 좋아야 할 만큼 좋지 않다)"라고 풀이했다.

"You've got to promise you won't go off half-cocked and do something rash(준비가 부족한 채로 뭔가를 성급하게 하려 들지 않겠다고 약속해야 해)."
