케임브릿지 사전은 'compunction'을 "a slight guilty feeling about something you have done or might do(자신이 하거나 할지도 모르는 일에 대한, 약간의 죄책감)"라고 정의했다.

"I wouldn't have any compunction about telling him to leave(나는 그에게 가라고 말하는 데 죄책감을 전혀 느끼지 않을 거다)."

콜린스 사전은 'compunction'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone has no compunction about doing something, you mean that they do it without feeling ashamed or guilty(어떤 사람이 무엇을 하는 데 compunction이 없다면, 그들이 부끄러움이나 죄책감을 느끼지 않고 그 일을 한다는 뜻이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"He has no compunction about relating how he killed his father(그는 어떻게 자신이 아버지를 죽였는지에 대해 들려 주는 데 거리낌이 없었다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'compunction'을 "a feeling that you should not do something because it is bad or wrong(어떤 일이 나쁘거나 잘못되었기 때문에 하면 안 된다는 느낌)"이라고 풀이했다.

"He had no compunction about interfering in her private affairs(그는 그녀의 개인적 일에 끼어드는 데 거리낌이 없었다)."

"They used their tanks against the leftists without compunction(그들은 죄책감도 없이 좌파들을 밀어버리는 데 탱크를 썼다)."
