케임브릿지 사전은 'shill'을 "someone who helps another person to persuade people to buy something, especially by pretending to be a satisfied customer(특히 만족스러운 손님인 척해서, 다른 사람으로 하여금 무엇을 사도록 설득하는 사람)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'shill'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you refer to someone as a shill, you mean that they are paid to sell something or to participate in an activity in order to persuade others to buy or participate(어떤 사람을 shill이라고 표현한다면, 그들이 다른 사람들로 하여금 어떤 것을 사거나 참여하도록 설득하기 위해 그것을 팔도록, 또는 어떤 행위에 참여하도록 돈을 받는다는 뜻이다)." 미국식에, 격식을 차리지 않고(informal), 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"He is tarnishing his reputation by being a shill for the tobacco industry(그는 담배 산업의 앞잡이가 됨으로써 자신의 명성을 손상시키고 있다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'shill'을 "a person who pretends to be a happy customer in order to trick somebody else into buying a product(상대가 어떤 제품을 사도록 속이기 위해, 만족한 손님인 척하는 사람)"라고 풀이했다.
