케임브릿지 사전은 'obsequious'를 "too eager to praise or obey someone(상대를 칭찬하거나 명령을 따르려고 애쓰는)"이라고 정의했다.

"She is embarrassingly obsequious to anyone in authority(그녀는 권위를 가진 사람이라면 누구든 아부하려 하는 게 보는 내가 부끄러울 정도다)."

콜린스 사전은 'obsequious'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone as obsequious, you are criticizing them because they are too eager to help or agree with someone more important than them(어떤 사람을 obsequious라고 묘사한다면, 그들이 자신보다 더 중요한 사람을 돕거나 그들의 의견에 동의하려고 너무 애를 쓰기 때문에 이 점을 비판하는 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"Perhaps your mother was very obsequious to doctors(아마 네 어머니는 의사들에게 무척 아부하셨나 보지)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'obsequious'를 "trying too hard to please somebody, especially somebody who is important(특히 중요한 사람에게, 그들을 기쁘게 하려고 무척 애를 쓰는)"라고 풀이했다.

"an obsequious manner(아부하는 태도)"
