[영어 공부] in tandem(~와 같이, 협력하여)

 

장르를 불문하고 춤을 추는 분들은 참 대단한 것 같다. 나로 말할 것 같으면, 손동작이나 발동작만 따로 하면 어느 정도 비슷하게 흉내는 낼 수는 있는데, 그 두 개를 동시에 하려면 허우적대는 사람이기 때문이다.

어떤 두 가지가 '동시에', '같이' 일어나는 걸 'in tandem'이란 표현을 이용해서 묘사할 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'in tandem'을 "at the same time(동시에)"이라고 정의했다.

"The heart and lungs will be transplanted in tandem(심장과 폐가 동시에 이식될 것이다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'in tandem'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If one thing happens or is done in tandem with another thing, the two things happen at the same time(어떤 하나가 다른 것과 in tandem 하여 일어나거나 행해진다면, 두 가지가 동시에 일어나는 것이다)." 

"Malcolm's contract will run in tandem with his existing one(말콤의 계약은 기존의 계약과 동시에 진행될 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'in tandem'을 "together and at the same time(같이, 그리고 동시에)"이라고 풀이했다.
