케임브릿지 사전은 'ditch'를 "to get rid of something or someone that is no longer wanted(더 이상 원하지 않는 어떤 것 또는 누군가를 없애다)"라고 정의했다.

"The getaway car had been ditched a couple of miles away from the scene of the robbery(강도 현장에서 2마일 떨어진 곳에 도주 차량이 버려졌다)."

"Did you know that Sarah ditched (= ended her relationship with) her boyfriend last week?(지난주에 사라가 남자 친구랑 헤어진 거 알아?)"

콜린스 사전은 'ditch'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you ditch something that you have or are responsible for, you abandon it or get rid of it, because you no longer want it(자신이 가지거나 책임져야 하는 것을 ditch 한다면, 그것을 더 이상 원하지 않기 때문에 그것을 버리거나 없애는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"I decided to ditch the sofa bed(나눈 소파 겸용 침대를 버리기로 결심했다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'ditch'를 "to get rid of someone or something because you no longer like or need them(더 이상 어떤 사람 또는 어떤 것을 좋아하거나 필요로 하지 않기 때문에 없애다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"The series was ditched after the star of the show quit(그 시리즈는 쇼의 스타들이 하차한 후 버려졌다)."

"He ditched the gun in a bin as he ran away(그는 도망가는 와중에 총을 쓰레기통에 버렸다)."
