[영어 공부] rule of thumb(대충이지만 경험에 바탕을 둔 방법, 어림 감정)

 

자가 없으면 대충 손바닥을 펴서 이 한 뼘이 대략 몇 센티니까 이 정도면 어느 정도겠다 하고 길이를 잰다. 이렇게 대략적이지만 경험을 바탕으로 한, 어림짐작이긴 하되 어느 정도 신빙성이 있는 규칙 또는 원칙을 'rule of thumb'이라고 한다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'rule of thumb'을 "a practical and approximate way of doing or measuring something(어떤 것을 행하거나 측정하는 실질적이고 대략적인 방법)"이라고 정의했다.

"A good rule of thumb is that a portion of rice is two handfuls(대략 쌀의 분량은 두 줌이라고 보면 대체로 맞는다)."

콜린스 사전은 'rule of thumb'을 이렇게 설명했다, "A rule of thumb is a rule or principle that you follow which is not based on exact calculations, but rather on experience(rule of thumb은 정확한 계산에 기초한 것이 아니라 경험에 기초한 규칙 또는 원칙이다)."

"A good rule of thumb is that a broker must generate sales of ten times his salary(경험상 브로커는 자기 연봉의 10배 정도 수익을 내야 한다)." 

"As a rule of thumb, a cup of filter coffee contains about 80mg of caffeine(경험으로 측정해 보자면 필터 커피 한 컵은 약 80mg의 카페인이 들었다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'rule of thumb'을 "a rule that you use for doing or explaining things, that is based on experience(경험에 근거하여 어떤 것을 하거나 설명하는 규칙)"라고 풀이했다.

"A good rule of thumb is to start painting the wall that’s nearest the window(경험상 창문 제일 가까이에 있는 벽부터 페인트칠을 시작하는 게 좋다)."
