[영어 공부] no thanks to(~에도 불구하고, ~의 도움 없이)

 

'thanks to~'는 '~ 덕분에'라는 뜻인데 앞에 'no'가 붙어서 '~는 안 도와줬지만 (그래도 해냈다)'이라는 뜻이 됐다.

만약에 누구에게 대놓고 '하나도 안 고맙다'라고 말하고 싶으면 "Thanks for nothing!"이라고 하면 된다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'no thanks to'를 "despite someone(누구에도 불구하고)"이라고 정의했다.

"We finished the painting, no thanks to Sandra, who decided she had to go away for the weekend(우리는 샌드라가 주말 여행을 떠나야겠다고 결심해 그녀의 도움을 받지 못했음에도 불구하고 그 그림을 완성했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'no thanks to'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something happens no thanks to a particular person or thing, you mean that they did not help it to happen, or that it happened in spite of them(어떤 것이 어떤 특정한 사람이나 사람과 no thanks to 하게 일어났다면, 그들이 도와주지 않았음에도 그것이 일어났다고, 또는 그들에도 불구하고 일어났다고 말하는 것이다)."

"It is no thanks to the Government that net assets did rise(순자산이 오른 것은 정부 덕분이 아니다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'no thanks to'를 "used for saying that someone or something did not help you to achieve something(누가 또는 어떤 것이 당신이 무엇을 이루는 것을 도와주지 않았다고 말할 때 쓰는 말)"이라고 풀이했다.

"At long last we made it, no thanks to you(너는 안 도와줬지만 그래도 결국 우린 해냈어)."
