[영어 공부] faint-hearted(용기 없는, 겁 많은, 심약한)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'fainthearted'를 이렇게 정의했다. "Someone who is fainthearted is not confident or brave and dislikes taking unnecessary risks(fainthearted한 사람은 자신감이 없거나 용감하지 않고 불필요한 위험을 감수하는 것을 싫어하는 사람이다)"

"He deals with subjects more fainthearted filmmakers would stay away from."

콜린스 사전은 'faint-hearted'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone or their behaviour as faint-hearted, you mean that they are not very confident and do not take strong action because they are afraid of failing(어떤 사람 또는 그들의 행동을 faint-hearted라고 표현한다면, 그들은 자신감이 없으며 실패를 두려워하기 때문에 강한 행동을 취하지 않는 사람이다)."

"This is no time to be faint-hearted(지금은 심약하게 굴 때가 아니다)."

"The voters may be ready to punish the politicians who devised a faint-hearted solidarity pact(유권자들은 심약한 연대 약속을 고안해 낸 정치인들을 처벌할 준비가 됐을지도 모른다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'not for the faint-hearted'라고 한다면 "not suitable for people who are easily frightened or shocked(쉽게 겁을 먹거나 충격받는 이들에게 적절하지 않은)"라는 뜻이다.
