케임브릿지 사전은 'succumb'을 "to lose the determination to oppose something; to accept defeat(어떤 것에 반대할 의지를 잃다; 패배를 인정하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The town finally succumbed last week after being pounded with heavy artillery for more than two months(그 마을은 두 달 이상 중포로 공격받은 후 지난주에 마침내 굴복했다)."

"I'm afraid I succumbed to temptation and had a piece of cheesecake(나는 유혹에 굴복해서 치즈케이크 한 조각을 먹어 버렸다)."

"I felt sure it would only be a matter of time before he succumbed to my charms(나는 그가 내 매력에 굴복하는 건 시간문제라고 확신했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'succumb'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you succumb to temptation or pressure, you do something that you want to do, or that other people want you to do, although you feel it might be wrong(유혹이나 압박에 succumb한다면, 그것이 틀릴 수도 있다고 느끼는데도 불구하고 자신이 하는 일 또는 타인이 당신이 하기를 바라는 일을 하는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"Don't succumb to the temptation to have just one biscuit(비스킷 딱 하나만 먹자는 유혹에 굴복하지 마)."

"The Minister said his country would never succumb to pressure(장관은 자신의 조국은 압박에 굴복하지 않겠다고 말했다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'succumb'을 "to lose your ability to fight against someone or something, and to allow them to control or persuade you(누구 또는 어떤 것에 저항해 싸울 능력을 잃어버리고 그들로 하여금 당신을 통제하거나 설득하도록 허용하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"First they said no, but eventually they succumbed(처음에 그들은 안 된다고 했는데, 결국 그들은 굴복했다)."

"She succumbed to temptation and ordered a glass of wine(그녀는 유혹에 굴복하고 와인 한 잔을 주문했다)."
