[영어 공부] attuned(익숙한, 적응한)

 

'attuned'라는 단어는 '코드가 맞는다'는 느낌이다.

'~으로'라는 방향을 나타내는 접두사 'at-/ad-'가 '곡조, 선율'이라고 할 때의 'tune'과 합쳐져서 생긴 단어인데, 악기를 조율하듯 나와 어떤 대상의 '코드가 맞아'서, 그 대상이 익숙하고 그 대상에 관해 예민하게 대처할 수 있는(그런 걸 보면 빨리 알아차린다든가) 걸 말한다. 

케임브릿지 사전은 'attuned'를 "able to understand or recognize something(어떤 것을 이해하거나 알아볼 수 있는)"이라고 정의했다.

"A good nurse has to be attuned to the needs of his or her patients(능력 있는 간호사는 환자의 필요에 적절히 대응할 수 있어야 한다)."

"Politicians must be highly attuned to these dangers(정치인들은 그러한 위험 요소를 잘 알아차려야 한다)."

"Teenage slang is of interest to socially attuned linguists(십 대의 은어는 사회에 민감한 언어학자들에게 관심의 대상이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'attuned'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you are attuned to something, you can understand and appreciate it(어떤 것에 attuned 하다면, 그것을 이해하고 가치를 알아볼 수 있는 것이다)."

"I have become attuned to Carlisle's industrial past(나는 칼라일의 공업적 과거에 더욱 익숙해졌다)." 

"He seemed unusually attuned to people's feelings(그는 사람들의 감정에 유별나게 민감한 듯하다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'attuned'를 "familiar with something and able to deal with it in a sensitive way(어떤 것에 익숙해서 민감하게 대응할 수 있는)"라고 풀이했다.

"The company needs people who are attuned to today’s youth culture(그 기업은 오늘날 젊은이들의 문화에 익숙한 이들을 필요로 한다)."
