[영어 공부] the lowdown(실정, 진상, 내막, 비밀 정보)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'the lowdown'을 "the most important facts and information about something(어떤 것에 관한 가장 중요한 사실 또는 정보)"이라고 정의했다.

"Our fashion editor gives you the lowdown on winter coats for this season(우리 패션 에디터가 여러분께 이번 시즌 겨울 코트에 관한 비밀 정보를 알려 드립니다."

콜린스 사전은 'low-down'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone gives you the low-down on a person or thing, they tell you all the important information about them(누군가 당신에게 어떤 사람 또는 사물에 관한 the lowdown을 준다면, 그들에 관한 중요한 정보를 당신에게 이야기해 주는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"We want you to give us the low-down on your team-mates(당신의 팀메이트들에 관한 내막을 알려 주시면 좋겠군요)."

맥밀란 사전은 'the lowdown'을 "the important or interesting information that you need to know about someone or something(어떤 사람 또는 사물에 관해 알아야 할 필요가 있는, 중요하거나 흥미로운 정보)"이라고 풀이했다.

"You’d better give me the lowdown on all the candidates(모든 후보자들에 대한 비밀 정보를 내게 알려 주는 게 좋을 거요)."
