[영어 공부] keep up appearances(겉치레하다)

 

'keep up appearances'는 실제로는 괴롭거나 문제가 있어도 겉으로 보이는 것(appearances)을 유지하는(keep up) 것이다. 

즉, 힘들거나 실제로 그럴 만한 상황이 아닌데도 괜찮은 척, 문제가 없는 척하는 걸 말한다. 아래 예문에서처럼 사실 부부가 더 이상 서로를 사랑하지 않고 헤어지고 싶지만 아이들을 위해 아무 문제 없는 척하는 것, 그런 게 'keep up appearances'다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'keep up appearances'를 "to pretend to be happier, less poor, etc. than you really are, because you do not want people to know how bad your situation is(당신의 상황이 얼마나 나쁜지를 사람들이 알기를 바라지 않기 때문에 더 행복한 척, 덜 가난한 척 등등 행동하다)"라고 정의했다.

"They were very unhappily married but kept up appearances for the sake of their children(그들의 결혼 생활은 불행했지만 자녀들을 위해 겉으로는 행복한 척했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'keep up appearances'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you keep up appearances, you try to behave and dress in a way that people expect of you, even if you can no longer afford it(keep up appearances 한다면, 더 이상 그럴 경제적 여유가 없음에도 불구하고 사람들이 당신에게 기대하는 대로 행동하고 옷을 입으려고 하는 것이다)."

"His parents' obsession with keeping up appearances haunted his childhood(그의 부모님은 겉으로 모든 게 괜찮은 척하는 일에 집착했고, 그게 그의 어린 시절을 괴롭혔다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'keep up appearances'를 "to pretend that everything is good, for example with your marriage or your financial situation, even though you are having problems(예를 들어 결혼이나 경제적 상황 등 문제가 있음에도 불구하고, 모든 것이 괜찮은 척하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"Their marriage was over, but they wanted to keep up appearances for the children(그들의 결혼은 끝이 났지만, 자녀들을 위해 겉으로는 문제가 없는 척하기를 바랐다)."
