케임브릿지 사전은 'tantalizing'을 이렇게 정의했다. "Something that is tantalizing causes desire and excitement in you, but is unlikely to provide a way of satisfying that desire(tantalizing한 것은 당신에게 욕망과 흥분을 일으키지만, 그 욕망을 만족시킬 방법을 제공할 가능성이 없는 것이다)"

"I caught a tantalizing glimpse of the sparkling blue sea through the trees(나는 숲 사이라 반짝이는 파란 바다를 감질나게 흘끗 보았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'tantalize'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone or something tantalizes you, they make you feel hopeful and excited about getting what you want, usually before disappointing you by not letting you have what they appeared to offer(어떤 사람 또는 사물이 당신을 tantalize한다면, 당신이 원하는 것을 얻을 수 있다고 희망을 가지고 흥분하게 하나, 대개 그들이 제안하는 것처럼 보이는 것을 당신이 가지게 하지 않음으로써 실망시키는 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'tantalize'를 "to make someone feel excited by showing or offering them something that they want, often with no intention of giving it to them(대개 그것을 실제로 줄 의도는 없이 상대가 원하는 것을 보여 주거나 제안해서 상대가 흥분하게 만들다)"이라고 풀이했다.
