[영어 공부] stretch the truth/facts(사실을 과장[곡해]하다)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'stretch'를 "the fact that something has gone past its usual limits(어떤 것이 통상적인 한계를 지나쳤다는 사실)"라고 정의했다.

"His idea may be a stretch, but it's not outside the realm of possibility(그의 아이디어는 약간 과장됐을지도 모르지만, 가능성의 영역 밖에 있는 것은 아니다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'stretch'를 "an exaggeration(과장)"이라고 설명했다.

"It would be a stretch to call this restaurant the best in the city(이 레스토랑이 시내에서 최고라고 말한다면 과장이 될 것이다)."

롱맨 사전은 'stretch the truth/facts'를 "to say or write something that is not completely true(완전히 진실만은 아닌 것을 말하거나 쓰다)"라고 풀이했다.

"Reporters sometimes stretch the facts to make a point(기자들은 때로 자기 주장이 정당함을 밝히기 위해 사실을 곡해하기도 한다)."
