케임브릿지 사전은 'reach out to sb'를 "to try to communicate with a person or a group of people, usually in order to help or involve them(대개 상대를 돕거나 상대를 참여시키기 위해 한 사람 또는 사람들 무리와 의사소통하려 하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The new mayor is reaching out to inner city communities to involve them in his plans for the city(새 시장은 그의 도시 계획에 내부 도시 커뮤니티를 참여시키기 위해 그들에게 손을 뻗고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'reach out to'를 "to attempt to establish friendly or sympathetic relations (with someone)((누구와) 친근한 또는 동정적인 관계를 맺기 위해 시도하다)"라고 설명했다.

맥밀란 사전은 'reach out'을 "to offer help to someone(누구에게 도움을 제공하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"We are reaching out to the most vulnerable members of the community(우리는 이 커뮤니티의 가장 취약한 구성원들에게 손길을 내밀고 있다)."

또한 'reach out'에는 "to ask someone for help(누군가에게 도움을 요청하다)"라는 뜻도 있다.

"She urged him to reach out to his family(그녀는 그에게 가족에게 도움을 요청하라고 충고했다)."
