케임브릿지 사전은 'pitfall'을 "a likely mistake or problem in a situation(어떤 상황에서 일어날 법한 실수 또는 문제점)"이라고 정의했다.

"The store fell into one of the major pitfalls of small business, borrowing from suppliers by paying bills late(그 가게는 공급자에게 비용을 늦게 지불함으로써 (물건을) 빌리는, 소기업의 가장 중대한 위험에 빠졌다)."

"There's a video that tells new students about pitfalls to avoid(새로운 학생들에게 피해야 할 위험을 알려 주는 비디오가 있다)."
