케임브릿지 사전은 'go to great lengths'를 "to try very hard to achieve something(어떤 것을 성취하려고 무척 노력하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Some people go to great lengths to make their homes attractive(어떤 이들은 자신의 집을 매력적으로 꾸미려고 아주 많은 노력을 기울인다)."

"He'll go to any lengths to get what he wants(그는 자신이 원하는 걸 얻기 위해서는 무엇이든 할 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'go to greatt lengths'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone goes to great lengths to achieve something, you mean that they try very hard and perhaps do extreme things in order to achieve it(누가 어떤 것을 성취하려고 go to great lengths한다고 말한다면, 그것을 성취하기 위해 아주 많이 노력하고, 어쩌면 극단적인 일도 한다는 뜻이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'go to great lengths'를 "to try in a very determined or unreasonable way to achieve something(어떤 것을 성취하려고 굳게 마음먹고 또는 지나치게 애를 쓰다)"이라고 풀이했다.
