케임브릿지 사전은 'out of hand'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If you refuse something out of hand, you refuse it completely without thinking about or discussing it(어떤 것을 out of hand 하게 거절한다면, 생각해 보거나 논의해 보지도 않고 완전히 거절하는 것이다)."

"Moving to London is certainly a possibility - I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand(런던으로 이사 가는 것도 분명히 가능성이 있지. 완전히 배제하지는 않을 거야)."

콜린스 사전은 'out of hand'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you dismiss or reject something out of hand, you do so immediately and do not consider believing or accepting it(어떤 것을 out of hand 하게 무시하거나 거절한다면, 즉각적으로 그렇게 하고 그것을 믿거나 받아들이는 것을 고려조차 하지 않는 것이다)."

"I initially dismissed the idea out of hand(나는 처음엔 그 아이디어를 즉각 배제했다)."

롱맨 사전은 'out of hand'를 "without even stopping to consider what someone has suggested, asked for etc(멈추어서 어떤 이가 무엇을 제안했는지, 요구했는지 등을 고려하지도 않고)"라고 풀이했다.
