케임브릿지 사전은 'let alone'을 "used to emphasize that something is more impossible than another thing(어떤 것이 다른 것보다 더욱 불가능하다는 점을 강조하기 위해 쓰이는 말)"이라고 정의했다.

"You couldn't trust her to look after your dog, let alone your child(그녀는 당신의 아이는 고사하고 당신의 개조차도 돌보아 줄 수 있으리라고 믿기 어려운 사람이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'let alone'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Let alone is used after a statement, usually a negative one, to indicate that the statement is even more true of the person, thing, or situation that you are going to mention next(let alone은 대개 부정적인 서술 뒤에 그 서술이 그 사람, 사물, 또는 상황에 더욱더 참이어서 다음에 나오는 것까지 언급하기 위해 쓰이는 말이다)."

"It is incredible that the 12-year-old managed to even reach the pedals, let alone drive the car(12살짜리가 차를 모는 것은 고사하고 페달에 발이 닿기나 한다는 것이 정말 믿을 수 없이 놀랍다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'let alone'을 "used for saying that something is even less likely to happen than another unlikely thing(어떤 것이 다른 불가능한 것보다 일어날 가능성이 더욱 적다고 말하기 위해 쓰이는 말)"이라고 풀이했다.

"I hardly have time to think these days, let alone relax(나는 요즘 쉬기는커녕 생각할 시간조차 없다)."
