[영어 공부] moult/molt(털갈이를 하다)

 

'moult'가 영국식 스펠링, 'molt'가 미국식이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'moult'를 "(of a bird or animal) to lose feathers, skin, or hair as a natural process at a particular time of year so that new feathers, skin, or hair can grow((새나 동물이) 새로운 깃털, 피부, 또는 털이 자랄 수 있도록, 일 년의 특정한 시기에 자연스러운 과정의 일부로 깃털, 피부, 또는 털을 잃다)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'moult'를 이렇게 설명했다. "When an animal or bird moults, it gradually loses its coat or feathers so that a new coat or feathers can grow(동물이나 새가 moult 한다면, 새로운 털 또는 깃털이 자랄 수 있도록 털 또는 깃털을 점차 잃는 것이다)."

"Finches start to moult at around twelve weeks of age(되새류는 생후 12주쯤 되면 털갈이를 하기 시작한다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'moult'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "if an animal or bird moults, it loses its outer layer of skin, fur, feathers etc so that a new layer can replace it(동물이나 새가 moult 한다면, 새로운 피부, 털, 깃털 등의 층으로 대체할 수 있도록 바깥쪽의 층을 잃는 것이다)"
