케임브릿지 사전은 'untenable'을 이렇게 정의했다. "An untenable situation cannot continue as it is(untenable한 상황은 그 자체로 지속될 수 없는 것이다)"

"If three people in four no longer support the government, isn't this an untenable situation?(4명 중 3명이 더 이상 정부를 지지하지 않는다면, 옹호할 수 없는 상황이 아니겠는가?)"

콜린스 사전은 'untenable'을 이렇게 설명했다. "An argument, theory, or position that is untenable cannot be defended successfully against criticism or attack(untenable한 논거, 이론, 또는 지위는 비판이나 공격에 맞서 성공적으로 방어될 수 없는 것이다)."

"This argument is untenable from an intellectual, moral and practical standpoint(이 논거는 지적이고 도덕적이고 현실적인 관점에서 방어될 수 없다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'untenable'을 "impossible to continue because of serious problems, opposition, or criticism(심각한 문제, 반대, 또는 비판 때문에 지속될 수 없는)"이라고 풀이했다.
