케임브릿지 사전은 'turn the tables'를 "to change from being in a weaker position in relation to someone else to being in a stronger position(다른 사람과 비교해 약한 지위에 있다가 강한 지위로 변하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The plaintiff’s lawyer turned the tables this morning by producing some strong new evidence(원고 측 변호사는 오늘 아침 강력한 새 증거를 제시함으로써 형세를 역전시켰다)."

콜린스 사전은 'turn the tables'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you turn the tables on someone, you change the situation completely, so that instead of them causing problems for you, you are causing problems for them(어떤 사람에게 turn the tables 한다면, 그 상황을 완전히 뒤바꾸어서, 상대가 당신에게 문제를 초래하는 대신에 당신이 그들에게 문제를 초래하는 것이다)."
