케임브릿지 사전은 'spate'를 "a larger number of events than usual, especially unpleasant ones, happening at about the same time(같은 때에 일어나는 평소보다 많은 사건들, 특히 불쾌한 것들)"이라고 정의했다.

"Police are investigating a spate of burglaries in the Kingsland Road area(경찰은 킹슬랜드 로드 지역에 일어난 일련의 강도 사건들을 수사하고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'spate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A spate of things, especially unpleasant things, is a large number of them that happen or appear within a short period of time(사물들, 특히 불쾌한 것들의 spate는 짧은 기간 내에 일어나거나 나타나는, 많은 그것들이다)."
