케임브릿지 사전은 'as it were'를 "sometimes said after a figurative (= not meaning exactly what it appears to mean) or unusual expression(때로 비유적인 표현 (=겉으로 보기에 의미하는 것 같은 뜻이 아닌 말) 또는 특이한 표현 뒤에 쓰는 말)"이라고 정의했다.

"If he still refuses we could always apply a little pressure, as it were(그는 아직도, 말하자면, 우리가 조금 압박을 가할 수 있다는 사실을 부정한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'as it were'를 이렇게 설명했다. "You say as it were in order to make what you are saying sound less definite(당신이 하는 말을 덜 단정적으로 들리게 하기 위해 as it were라는 표현을 쓴다)." 

"I'd understood the words, but I didn't, as it were, understand the question(나는 그 표현은 이해했으나, 이를테면 질문은 이해하지 못했다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'as it were'를 "used for making a description sound less definite or less exact(어떤 묘사를 덜 단정적이거나 덜 정확하게 들리게 하기 위해 쓰이는 말)"라고 풀이했다.
