케임브릿지 사전은 'name-drop'을 "to talk about famous people that you have met, often pretending that you know them better than you really do, in order to appear more important and special(더 중요하고 특별해 보이기 위해, 대개 실제보다 그들을 더 잘 아는 척하며, 당신이 만난 유명한 사람들의 이름에 대해 이야기하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"He has an exasperating tendency to name-drop(그는 유명 인사의 이름을 들먹이는, 짜증 나는 경향이 있다)."

"The company likes to name-drop famous clients, including the US and Russian presidents(그 기업은 미국과 러시아의 대통령처럼 유명한 고객들의 이름을 들먹이기를 좋아한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'name-drop'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone name-drops, you disapprove of them referring to famous people they have met in order to impress people(어떤 사람이 name-drop 한다면, 그들이 타인에게 좋은 인상을 주기 위해 그들이 만난 유명한 사람의 이름을 들먹인다는 사실을 못마땅하게 여기는 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"The assistant carried on talking to his mate, name-dropping all the famous riders he knew(그 비서는 자신의 친구에게, 그가 아는 모든 유명한 라이더들의 이름을 들먹이며 이야기를 계속했다)."

"I must stop saying everyone famous is a good friend. It sounds as if I'm name-dropping(유명한 사람들이 내 친한 친구라고 말하는 거 그만둬야 하는데. 내가 일부러 잘나 보이려고 그러는 거 같잖아)."

맥밀란 사전은 'drop names'를 "to say the names of famous people one knows to try to impress others(타인에게 좋은 인상을 주기 위해 자신이 아는 유명한 사람의 이름을 말하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"She's always dropping names(그는 언제나 유명인의 이름을 들먹인다)."
