케임브릿지 사전은 'break up'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If someone who is talking on a mobile phone is breaking up, their voice can no longer be heard clearly(휴대전화로 말하고 있는 사람이 break up 한다면, 더 이상 그 사람의 목소리가 깨끗하게 잘 들리지 않는 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'break up'을 이렇게 설명했다, "If you say that someone is breaking up when you are speaking to them on a mobile phone, you mean that you can only hear parts of what they are saying because the signal is interrupted(어떤 사람이 휴대전화로 말하고 있을 때 break up 한다면, 신호가 방해를 받아서 그들이 하는 말의 일부만 들을 수 있다는 뜻이다)."

"The line's gone; I think you're breaking up(전화가 끊겼어. 네 목소리가 지지직거리는 거 같아)."

맥밀란 사전은 'break up'을 이렇게 풀이했다. "if the sound on a radio or mobile phone breaks up, you can no longer hear the person who is speaking on it(무전이나 휴대전화의 소리가 break up 한다면, 거기에 대고 말하는 사람의 목소리가 더 이상 들리지 않는 것이다)"
