케임브릿지 사전은 'retain'을 "to keep or continue to have something(어떤 것을 유지하거나 계속 가지다)"이라고 정의했다.

"She has lost her battle to retain control of the company(그녀는 그 기업의 통제력을 유지하려는 전투에서 졌다)."

"He managed to retain his dignity throughout the performance(그는 어찌어찌해서 그 공연 내내 자신의 위엄성을 유지했다)."

"She succeeded in retaining her lead in the second half of the race(그녀는 그 경주의 후반에서 선두를 지키는 데 성공했다)."
