케임브릿지 사전은 'bite someone's head off'를 "to speak to someone angrily when there is no reason to(그럴 필요가 없는데 누군가에게 화를 내며 말하다)"라고 정의했다.

"I just asked if I could help – you don’t have to bite my head off!(내가 도울 수 있느냐고 물었을 뿐이야! 그렇게 화를 낼 필요는 없잖아!)"

콜린스 사전은 'bite someone's head off'를 이렇게 설명헀다. "If someone speaks or replies to you angrily, and you think they are being unfair or reacting too strongly, you can say that they bite your head off(어떤 사람이 당신에게 화를 내며 말하거나 대꾸하고, 당신은 그것이 불공평하거나 그들이 너무 격하게 반응한다고 생각한다면, bite your head off 한다고 말할 수 있다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.
