[영어 공부] reverse engineering(역설계, 분해 공학(다른 회사의 상품을 분해하여 그 생산 방식을 알아낸 뒤 복제하는 것))

 

'reverse engineering'은 '역설계, 분해 공학(다른 회사의 상품을 분해하여 그 생산 방식을 알아낸 뒤 복제하는 것)'이라는 뜻이다.

예컨대 라디오를 도면을 그려서 계획을 세워 조립하는 등 처음부터 만드는 게 아니라, 이미 만들어진 라디오를 분해해서 '음, 여기에 이게 있고 저기에는 뭐가 있군' 하면서 그 작동 원리를 파악하는 것이다. 'engineering'하는 순서가 뒤바뀌어(reverse) 있어서 'reverse engineering'이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'reverse engineering'을 "the act of copying the product of another company by looking carefully at how it is made(어떻게 그것이 만들어졌는지를 주의깊게 보아서 다른 회사의 제품을 복제하는 행위)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'reverse engineering'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Reverse engineering is a process in which a product or system is analysed in order to see how it works, so that a similar version of the product or system can be produced more cheaply(reverse engineering은 비슷한 제품 또는 체계를 더욱 저렴하게 생산할 수 있게 하기 위해 제품 또는 체계가 어떻게 작동하는지 보려고 이를 분석하는 것이다.)."

"Not only did the group acquire reverse engineering skills in the process, it also gained entry into the global market(그 그룹은 그 과정에서 역설계 기술을 얻었을 뿐 아니라, 전 세계 시장에 진입하기도 했다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'reverse engineering'을 "the activity of examining and copying a product developed by another company in order to make your own product(자신의 제품을 만들기 위해 다른 회사에서 개발된 제품을 분석하고 복제하는 행위)"라고 풀이했다.

"The company for years engaged in the reverse engineering of semiconductors(그 회사는 수년간 반도체의 역설계에 참여해 왔다)."
