케임브릿지 사전은 'offset'을 "to balance one influence against an opposing influence, so that there is no great difference as a result(한 가지 영향력을 다른 반대되는 영향력과 균형을 맞추어 결과적으로 큰 차이가 없게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"The extra cost of travelling to work is offset by the lower price of houses here(출근하는 데 드는 추가적 비용은 이곳의 낮은 집값으로 상쇄된다)."

"He keeps his petrol receipts because petrol is one of the expenses that he can offset against tax (= can show to the government as being a business cost, and so not pay tax)(그는 주유비 영수증을 모으는데, 주유비는 세금을 상쇄할 수 있는 비용들 중 하나이기 때문이다)."
