케임브릿지 사전은 'catty'를 이렇게 정의했다. "Catty words, especially speech, are unkind because they are intended to hurt someone(catty한 말, 특히 연설은 다른 이에게 상처를 주기 위해 의도되었기 때문에 불친절한 말이다)"

"She's always making catty remarks about her sister(그녀는 언제나 자기 동생/언니에 대해 심술궃게 말한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'catty를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone is being catty, you mean that they are being unpleasant and unkind(어떤 사람이 catty하다고 말하면, 그들이 불쾌하고 불친절하다는 뜻이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"His mother was catty, status-conscious and loud(그의 어머니는 심술궃게 말하고, 지위를 의식하며, 목소리가 크다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'catty'를 "used for describing someone who enjoys saying cruel or unpleasant things about other people(다른 사람들에 대해 잔인하거나 불쾌한 말을 하는 걸 즐기는 사람을 묘사하기 위해 쓰이는 말)"이라고 풀이했다.
