[영어 공부] solidarity(연대, 결속)

 

'solidarity'는 '연대, 결속'이라고 하는데, 예컨대 LGBTQ+ 커뮤니티의 성소수자들을 지지함을 보이기 위해 무지개 아이템을 착용한다든가, 한국과 호주가 더욱더 밀접하고 견고한 관계를 맺겠다는 협정을 맺을 때 'solidarity'라는 단어를 쓸 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'solidarity'를 "agreement between and support for the members of a group, especially a political group(어떤 그룹, 특히 정치적 그룹의 회원들 사이의 동의와 지지)"이라고 정의했다.

"The situation raises important questions about solidarity among member states of the UN(이 상황은 UN의 회원국들의 연대에 대한 중요한 질문들을 제기하게 한다)."

"The purpose of the speech was to show solidarity with the country's leaders(그 연설의 목적은 그 국가의 지도자와 연대감을 보이기 위한 것이었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'solidarity'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If a group of people show solidarity, they show support for each other or for another group, especially in political or international affairs(한 그룹의 사람들이 solidarity를 보인다면, 특히 정치적ㅇ이거나 국제적인 사건에 대해 서로 또는 다른 그룹을 위한 지지를 보인다는 뜻이다)."

"Supporters want to march tomorrow to show solidarity with their leaders(지지자들은 그들의 지도자들과의 연대를 보이기 위해 내일 행진하기를 원한다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'solidarity'를 "the support that people in a group give each other because they have the same opinions or aims(같은 의견 또는 목표를 가지고 있기 때문에 어떤 그룹의 사람들이 서로에게 주는 지지)"라고 풀이했다.

"a need to create solidarity among the president’s top economic advisers(대통령의 최고 경제 자문들 사이에 연대를 만들어야 할 필요)"
