케임브릿지 사전은 'privy'를 "to be told information that is not told to many people(많은 이들에게 이야기되지 않은 정보를 듣다)"라고 정의했다.

"I was never privy to conversations between top management(나는 최고 경영층 사이의 대화를 절대 알 수가 없었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'privy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you are privy to something secret, you have been allowed to know about it(어떤 비밀스러운 것에 privy 하다면, 그것에 대해 아는 것이 허락된 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"Only three people, including a police officer, will be privy to the facts(경찰을 포함해 오직 세 명만이 사실을 알게 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'privy'를 "knowing about something, usually official information, that other people do not know(다른 사람들이 알지 못하는, 대개 공식적인 정보를 아는)"라고 풀이했다.

"He had not been privy to their talks(그는 그들의 대화를 알지 못했다)."

"They were not, however, privy to the contract(그러나 그들은 그 계약에 대해 알지 못했다)."
