케임브릿지 사전은 'purport'를 "to pretend to be or to do something, especially in a way that is not easy to believe(어떤 것인 척하거나 어떤 일을 하는 척하다, 특히 믿기 힘든 방식으로 그렇게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"They purport to represent the wishes of the majority of parents at the school(그들은 그 학교의 학부모들 다수가 가진 소망을 대변한다고 주장한다)."

"The study purports to show an increase in the incidence of the disease(그 연구는 그 병의 발병 정도가 증가했음을 보인다고 주장한다)."

"The tape recording purports to be of a conversation between the princess and a secret admirer(그 녹음 테이프는 공주와 비밀스러운 흠모자 사이의 대화를 녹음한 것이라고 주장한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'purport'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone or something purports to do or be a particular thing, you mean that they claim to do or be that thing, although you may not always believe that claim(어떤 사람이나 사물이 특정한 것을 하거나 그 특정한 것이라고 purport 한다면, 당신이 그 주장을 언제나 믿지는 않음에도 불구하고 그들이 그것을 하거나 그것이라고 주장한다는 뜻이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"...a book that purports to tell the whole truth(...진실을 전부 이야기한다고 주장하는 책)."

맥밀란 사전은 'purported'를 "said by some people to be real or true, but not proved to be real or true(어떤 사람들이 사실 또는 참이라고 이야기하지만, 그것이 사실 또는 참이라고 증명되지는 않는)"라고 풀이했다.

"The judges will now study this purported new evidence(판사들은 이제 새로운 증거라고 알려진 것들을 살펴볼 것이다)."
