케임브릿지 사전은 'respite'를 "a pause or rest from something difficult or unpleasant(어렵거나 불쾌한 일의 중지 또는 그런 것들로부터의 휴식)"라고 정의했다.

"We worked for hours without respite(우리는 쉬지 않고 몇 시간이나 계속 일했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'respite'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A respite is a short period of rest from something unpleasant(respite는 불쾌한 것으로부터 휴식하는 짧은 기간을 말한다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"It was some weeks now since they had had any respite from shellfire(그들이 포격을 중단하지 않은 지 몇 주나 되었다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'respite'를 "a short period of rest from having to deal with a difficult or unpleasant situation(어렵거나 불쾌한 상황을 대처하는 것으로부터의 짧은 휴식 기간)"이라고 풀이했다.

"The road works have given residents a much-needed respite from the constant traffic(그 도로 보수 작업은 거주자들에게 그들이 그토록 필요로 했던, 끊임없는 교통 혼잡으로부터의 일시적 중단을 가져왔다)."

"There has been no respite in the terrible weather(이 끔찍한 날씨는 중단되지 않고 계속되고 있다)."

"The pain in his leg continued without respite(그의 다리 통증은 쉬지 않고 계속되었다)."
