케임브릿지 사전은 'commioserate'를 "to express sympathy to someone about some bad luck(누군가에게 (그의) 불운에 대해 동정심을 표현하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"I began by commiserating with her over the defeat(나는 그 패배에 대해 그녀에게 위로를 표하는 것으로 시작했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'commiserate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you commiserate with someone, you show them pity or sympathy when something unpleasant has happened to them(어떤 사람과 commiserate한다면, 불쾌한 일이 그들에게 일어났을 때 그들에게 연민 또는 동정심을 보이는 것이다)."

"When I lost, he commiserated with me(내가 졌을 때, 그는 나를 위로해 주었다)."
