케임브릿지 사전은 'wrest'를 "to get something with effort or difficulty(애를 써서, 또는 어렵게 어떤 것을 얻다)"라고 정의했다.

"The shareholders are planning to wrest control of the company (away) from the current directors(주주들은 현재 임원들로부터 회사의 통제권을 가져올 계획을 세우고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'wrest'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you wrest something from someone else, you take it from them, especially when this is difficult or illegal(어떤 것을 누구로부터 wrest 한다면, 특히 그것이 어렵거나 불법적일 때 그것을 가져오는 것이다)." 대체로 저널리즘(journalism)에서 쓰는 말이다.

"For the past year he has been trying to wrest control from the central government(지난 한 해 동안 그는 중앙 정부에게서 통제권을 되찾으려고 노력해 왔다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'wrest'를 "to get land, power, or possessions from someone, usually by fighting(대개 싸워서 어떤 사람으로부터 땅, 통치권, 또는 소지품을 얻어내다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"Russia wrested control of the northern Caucasus in the 19th century(19세기에 러시아는 북 코카서스의 통제권을 얻었다)."
