케임브릿지 사전은 'high spirits'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If someone is in high spirits, they are extremely happy and having a good time(누군가 in high spirits 하다면, 극히 행복해하며 좋은 시간을 보내는 것이다)."

"They'd had a couple of drinks and were in high spirits(그들은 두어 잔 술을 마시고 기분이 무척 좋은 상태였다)."

콜린스 사전은 'high spirits'를 이렇게 설명했다. "if you talk about someone's high spirits, you mean their liveliness and cheerfulness(어떤 사람의 high spirits에 대해 이야기한다면, 그들의 명랑함과 쾌활함을 말하는 것이다)."
