케임브릿지 사전은 'pump someone up'을 "to make someone feel more confident or excited(어떤 사람이 더욱 자신감이 넘치거나 흥분되게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"He was offering them advice and trying to pump them up(그는 그들에게 조언을 해주면서 그들의 기운을 북돋아 주려고 노력하고 있었다)."

"The players were pumping themselves up by singing the national anthem before the game(선수들은 경기 전 국가를 부르며 기운을 북돋우고 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'pump up'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you pump yourself up for something, you prepare yourself for it mentally, especially by telling yourself that you can succeed(어떤 것을 위해 pump yourself up 한다면, 특히 당신이 성공할 수 있다고 말함으로써 그것을 정신적으로 준비하는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.
