케임브릿지 사전은 'confiscate'를 "to take a possession away from someone when you have the right to do so, usually as a punishment and often for a limited period, after which it is returned to the owner(그럴 자격이 있을 때, 보통 처벌을 위해, 그리고 대개 제한된 시기 동안 누군가에게서 소유물을 빼앗고, 그다음에 소유자에게 돌려 주다)"라고 정의했다.
