케임브릿지 사전은 'amalgamation'을 "the process in which separate organizations unite to form a larger organization or group, or an organization or group formed in this way(개별적인 조직들이 더 큰 조직 또는 그룹을 형성하기 위해 합병하는 과정 또는 이런 식으로 형성된 조직)"라고 정의했다.
