케임브릿지 사전은 'restitution'을 "the return of objects that were stolen or lost(도둑맞았거나 잃어버린 물건의 반환)"라고 정의했다.

"They are demanding the restitution of ancient treasures that were removed from the country in the 16th century(그들은 16세기에 그 나라에서 빼앗긴 고대 보물의 반환을 요구하고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'restitution'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Restitution is the act of giving back to a person something that was lost or stolen, or of paying them money for the loss(restitution은 잃어버렸거나 빼앗긴 것을 어떤 사람에게 돌려주거나 그 분실을 보상하기 위해 돈을 주는 행위이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"The victims are demanding full restitution(피해자들은 전액 반환을 요구하고 있다)." 

"We have asked that they rehire the people they fired and make restitution to them(우리는 그들이 해고한 이들을 다시 고용하고 보상해 주기를 요구해 왔다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'restitution'을 "the act of returning something that was lost or stolen to the person it belongs to(잃어버렸거나 도둑맞은 것을 그것의 주인인 사람에게 돌려주는 행위)"라고 풀이했다.
