케임브릿지 사전은 'conundrum'을 "a problem that is difficult to deal with(대처하기 어려운 문제)"라고 정의했다.

"Arranging childcare over the school holidays can be a real conundrum for working parents(학교 방학 동안 아이 돌보는 일을 계획하는 일은 일하는 부모들에게 정말 어려운 문제일 수 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'conundrum'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A conundrum is a problem or puzzle which is difficult or impossible to solve(conundrum은 풀기에 어렵거나 불가능한 문제 또는 퍼즐을 말한다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"...this theological conundrum of the existence of evil and suffering in a world created by a good God(...선한 신에 의해 창조된 세상에서 악과 고통의 존재라는 신학적인 난문제)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'conundrum'을 "a confusing problem or question that is very difficult to solve(풀기에 아주 어려운, 혼란스러운 문제나 질문)"라고 풀이했다.

"The role of clouds is one of the big conundrums of climatology(구름의 역할은 기후학에서 큰 난문제들 중 하나이다)."
