케임브릿지 사전은 'wheedle'을 "to try to persuade someone to do something or give you something by praising them or being intentionally charming(어떤 사람을 칭찬하거나 일부러 매력적으로 굴어서 그들이 무엇을 하거나 당신에게 무엇을 주도록 설득하려 하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"She's one of those children who can wheedle you into giving her anything she wants(그녀는 자신이 원하는 것은 무엇이든 주게 꾈 수 있는 그런 종류의 아이들 중 하나이다)."

"She wasn't invited, but somehow she managed to wheedle her way in(그녀는 초대받지 않았지만, 어떻게든 사람들을 꾀어서 들어오는 데 성공했다)."

"If you say that someone wheedles, you mean that they try to persuade someone to do or give them what they want, for example by saying nice things that they do not mean(어떤 사람이 wheedle한다고 말하면, 그들이 예를 들어 진심이 아닌, 듣기 좋은 말을 함으로써 그들이 무엇을 하거나 자신이 원하는 것을 받아내게 설득하려 한다는 뜻이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.
