케임브릿지 사전은 'worth your salt'를 "good at your job(자기의 일을 잘하는)"이라고 정의했다.

"Any accountant worth their salt should be aware of the latest changes in taxation(유능한 회계사라면 누구나 최근의 세제 관련 변경 사항을 잘 알고 있어야 한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'worth one's salt'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say, for example, that any doctor worth his or her salt would do something, you mean that any doctor who was good at his or her job or who deserved respect would do it(예를 들어, worth his/her salt한 의사라면 무엇을 할 것이라고 말한다면, 자기 일을 잘하는 의사라면 누구나, 또는 존경받을 만한 의사라면 누구나 그렇게 할 것이라는 뜻이다)."

"Any coach worth his salt would do exactly as I did(유능한 코치라면 바로 나처럼 했을 것이다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'worth his/her salt'를 "doing their job well or deserving respect(일을 잘하는 또는 존경받을 만한)"라고 풀이했다.

"Any player worth his salt would love to play for his country(유능한 선수라면 누구나 국가 대표로 뛰고 싶어 할 것이다)."
