케임브릿지 사전은 'firebrand'를 "a person who causes political or social trouble by opposing authority and encouraging others to do so(권력에 대항해 다른 사람들에게도 그러기를 부추김으로써 정치적 또는 사회적 문제를 일으키는 사람)"라고 정의했다.

"He is trying hard to dispel his image as a left-wing firebrand(그는 좌파 선동가라는 이미지를 떨쳐내려고 무척 노력 중이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'firebrand'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone as a firebrand, especially someone who is very active in politics, you mean that they are always trying to make people take strong action(어떤 사람을, 특히 정치 면에서 아주 활발히 활동하는 사람을 firebrand라고 묘사한다면, 그들이 언제나 사람들로 하여금 강력한 행동을 취하도록 만들려고 한다는 뜻이다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'firebrand'를 "a person who is always encouraging other people to take strong political action, often causing trouble(대체로 문제를 일으키며, 언제나 다른 사람들로 하여금 강력한 정치적 행동을 취하도록 부추기는 사람)"이라고 풀이했다.
